The Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2008 or “New GI Bill” has resulted in rising enrollment and related demand for services by students in the USA. We examined current supports for student service members and veterans at institutions of higher education in Indiana in the context of this national trend.

Maternal perspectives on deployment and child-mother relationships in military families (2015)
We are still learning about the impact of deployment challenges of young children whose parent experience military wartime deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. To gain insight on this issue, MFRI contributing authors used survey data from 292 mothers of military children to study relations among military deployment factors, quality of maternal care and child attachment behavior with their mother.
Emotion expression, avoidance and psychological health during reintegration: A dyadic analysis of actor and partner associations within a sample of military couples (2015)
This article evaluated whether military couples’ coping strategies and emotional expression impacted each partner’s psychological health during reintegration. Authors simultaneously evaluated associations between service members’ own coping and psychological health, and how their significant others’ were impacted.
Privacy management in the military family during deployment: Adolescents’ perspectives (2015)
This study examines military adolescents’ experiences of managing private information within their families during a parental deployment. Thirty-eight adolescents were interviewed about how they and their families managed private information across the deployment cycle.
Evaluation of a multimedia intervention for children and families facing multiple military deployments (2015)
This study evaluated the impact of Talk, Listen, Connect: Multiple Deployments (TLC-II MD), a multimedia kit created by Sesame Workshop specifically for military families experiencing multiple deployments.
Overview of depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and alcohol misuse among active duty service members returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, self-report and diagnosis (2015)
This study presents an overview of three mental health problems associated with deployment among Air Force, Army, Marine Corp, and Navy service members returning from deployment to Iraq and Afghanistan between Jan. 2007 and March 2008.

Reported barriers to mental health care in three samples of U.S. Army National Guard soldiers at three time points (2014)
The military community and its partners have made vigorous efforts to address treatment barriers and increase appropriate mental health services use among returning National Guard soldiers. We assessed whether there were differences in reports of treatment barriers in three categories: stigma, logistics, or negative beliefs about treatment.
The impact of the military context on the grief process (2014)
The purpose of this longitudinal case study was to describe the grief process within a military context of two parents who lost a son in combat during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Effectiveness of a multimedia outreach kit for families of wounded veterans (2014)
This study evaluated a Sesame Workshop multimedia kit which included video and print materials, aimed to help caregivers assist young children as they adjusted to their parent’s injury. The authors hypothesized that use of the materials would produce improvements in caregiver and child outcomes as well as reductions in perceptions of disruption in the home.
