The Military Family Research Institute uses Zoom for some of its virtual events. This page details some issues users of the platform may experience and provides the information and tools required to overcome them.
Unable to find the event link
If you are registered for one of MFRI’s virtual events hosted on Zoom, an email containing a link to the event will be emailed to the same email address you used to register for the event. These emails are typically sent out in the days or weeks prior to the event, not at the time of registration. If you are unable to find the email, please check your junk or spam folder.
If you are still unable to find the link to join the event, please contact us by email at mfri@purdue.edu for assistance.
Joining the Event
Zoom offers numerous options for joining meetings and events. You can download Zoom for your computer, tablet or smartphone or join directly through a compatible web browser. For details, please refer to the documentation for joining a Zoom meeting on Zoom’s website.
The Zoom documentation recommends using the desktop client or mobile app over the in-browser web app, but in some cases, it is not possible to do so. You can join via the in-browser web app by:
- Clicking the event link,
- On the window that opens, clicking “Cancel” if a dialog box pops up asking to open Zoom, then clicking “Join from your browser,”
- Typing in your name and email address, then clicking “Next,”
- If your browser asks for permission to access your microphone you must allow it in order to hear the presenters. Your microphone will not be activated, as attendee microphones are disabled for the event.
Troubleshooting audio issues
A common pitfall of Zoom stems from the fact that Zoom requires access to your microphone in order to hear the presenter audio. Rest assured, your microphone will not be activated at any point during our event, and having a microphone is not required to join. If you’re unable to hear the presenter audio, ensure your device has been configured to allow Zoom to access your microphone.
If you’re experiencing further trouble with event audio, please refer to this Zoom Support article detailing common audio issues.
Additional help
If you still find yourself unable to join the event or meeting or unable to hear the event audio, please see the Zoom Support Center for additional information.
If you experience any issues with the event itself, please contact us at mfri@purdue.edu.
